The Argentine’s brace in the 5-4 extra-time win over Sevilla were his 79th and 80th goals in European competition, equalling Cristiano Ronaldo’s record tally.
Messi also increased his career Super Cup goal tally to a record three, level with Arie Haan, Francois Van der Elst, Gerd Muller, Oleh Blokhin, Radamel Falcao, Rob Rensenbrink and Terry McDermott.
The 28-year-old and Andres Iniesta both lifted their 25th club trophy with Barcelona, equalling Xavi’s record.
It was Barcelona’s fifth triumph in the Super Cup, which means the La Liga giants have now won as many Super Cup trophies as AC Milan.
Dani Alves drew level with Paolo Maldini on four Super Cup wins after lifting one with Sevilla in 2006 and now his third with Barcelona.
Barcelona boss Luis Enrique became only the fourth man to lift the Super Cup as coach and player; the others were Pep Guardiola, Carlo Ancelotti and Diego Simeone.
